WASTED ORIENT
A documentary by Kevin Fritz, USA/China, 2007, 92´.

The story of the rock band Joyside, from Beijing, and its first Chinese tour. The band is obsessed with Johnny Thunders and North-American punk philosophy, and has decided to share their message of beer-smelling apathy in the Chinese hinterland. Interviews in public restrooms, drinking sprees and the lyrics of their songs (“I don’t care about society!” “I want to piss on you!”) reveals the their view of China as a modern and sad country. This is Chinese subculture in the eyes of a punk group, outsiders in their own country.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Kevin Fritz was born in brought up in Pennsylvania, USA; he started editing tractor maintenance videos and ended up in the prestigious Beijing University to study the Chinese language. He co-produced, filmed and edited the movie A Day at the Goat Races, and was the photography director in the documentary The Chosen Ones.
