In a village next to a lake, Yuri and Akira are responsible for ringing the bell three times a day. Only by such action does the Dragon Goddess, who lives in the lake, remain asleep and does not flood the village, killing its inhabitants. Based on Kyoka Izumi's work and taking place in a single scenario, Takashi Miike filmed and directed the theatrical work and created a magical story about loyalty, love and the conflict between personal desires and social duties.

Takashi Miike is one of the most important and prolix Japanese moviemakers. At 47 years of age, he has already made over 70 films in varied genres and formats, among which are Izo (2004), Gozu (2003), Ichi the Killer (2001), The City of Last Souls (2000), and Audition (1999).
