A bourgeois couple, Lidia (Jeanne Moreau) and Giovanni (Marcello Mastroianni), a famous writer, is in crisis after a ten-year marriage. The story shows them during an evening marked by three events: a visit to Tommaso (Bernhard Wicki), an old friend who is dying in a hospital; the launch of Giovanni’s most recent book; and a party in the mansion of a millionaire family. This is the second movie in the "trilogy of incommunicability" that also includes A Aventura and O Eclipse.
